Dominican Republic - PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

How to move around Punta Cana

Public transportation in Punta Cana is very characteristic.
Driving in Dominican Republic is not easy. There are driving rules like everywhere else… the point is that here those rules are not even considered. How do you avoid accident? There is a Dominican way to drive. They have their own sets of rules which are not written anywere. For that reason a good suggestion is to let locals drive for you. Taxies,  motoconchos, guaguguas are your elections. But not every choice may be for everyone. Comfort is far from being an option, and security is seen under a different point of view… but it may be a fun way to move around.
The tipicals and characteristic options are:

GUAGUAS
Guauas  are local buses for daytime public transportation. Your resort or travel agent might have told you to stay inside the hotel and move around just with taxies. The truth is leaving your hotel and exploring on Bavaro’s public transportation is perfectly safe and absolutely cheaper than taking a hotel taxi, and can provide a real authentic taste of Dominican atmosphere.  In Punta Cana old school buses are often used for this purpose and don’t have air conditioning. There are no  bus stops as such. You can rise you arm anywhere on the street and the guagua will pick you up. Then just ask to stop wherever you want (but carefull, there are diffent .  Onboard there are two figures: the driver who drives and the “cobrador”  the person you pay to (but will not give you a ticket). A good idea is to have change to pay with. The price is about  RD$35  (less then a dollar) on each bus for local transportation and about RD$100 for trips to Higuey) .

MOTOCONCHOS

“Motoconcho” is a form of transportation found all over the Dominican Republic, probably the most used by locals. They are simply a motorcycle with a driver. It’s now becoming kind of a Dominican tradition and are also known as “mototaxi” . It’s not known exactly how and when this public form of transportation became a real service, but it’s known that already in the 80s “motoconchos” were used in Jarabacoa, DR. There is a thrill of moving around with a motoconchos: they pass each other without worring about cars behind, they ride on sidewalks when necessary, hit side-mirrors of cars, ride on the opposite lane in case of necessity, and of course, but expecially they carry more passengers at the same time and they can carry anything requested (I have seen gas tanks, mattresses, even a washing machine).
